CSIR JST & JSA Selection Process 2025

Junior Stenographer (JST) 

The selection process for the Junior Stenographer (JST) consists of a written examination followed by a stenography test.

Stage 1: Written Examination (Objective Type) 

  • Mode of Exam: CBT or OMR 
  • Type of Questions: Objective (MCQ) type 
  • Standard of Exam: 10+2 / XII
  • Medium of Language: English and Hindi 
  • No. of Questions: 200 
  • Total Marks: 200 (One marks for every correct answer) 
  • Total Time Duration: 2 hours (2 hours and 40 minutes for the candidates eligible for scribe) 
  • Negative Marking: 0.25 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer

  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 50 questions - 50 marks  
  • General Awareness: 50 questions - 50 marks  
  • English Language & Comprehension: 50 questions - 50 marks  

Stage 2: Stenography Skill Test (Qualifying in Nature) 

Candidates must qualify for a stenography test to proceed further.

Speed Requirement: 

  • English: 50 words per minute (70 for the candidates eligible for scribe)
  • Hindi: 65 words per minute (90 for the candidates eligible for scribe) 


The test assesses the candidate's ability to transcribe a dictated passage accurately within a stipulated time. 

Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) 

The selection process for the Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA) consists of a written examination with two papers followed by a computer typing speed test. 

Stage 1: Written Examination (Objective Type) 

Paper-1

  • Mode of Exam: CBT or OMR 
  • Type of Questions: Objective (MCQ) type 
  • Standard of Exam: 10+2 / XII
  • Medium of Language: English and Hindi 
  • No. of Questions: 100 
  • Total Marks: 200 (Two marks for every correct answer) 
  • Total Time Duration: 90 minutes 
  • Negative Marking: There will be no negative marks in this paper

  • Mental Ability Test: 100 questions - 200 marks  

Paper-2

  • Mode of Exam: CBT or OMR 
  • Type of Questions: Objective (MCQ) type 
  • Standard of Exam: 10+2 / XII
  • Medium of Language: English and Hindi 
  • No. of Questions: 100 
  • Total Marks: 300 (Three marks for every correct answer) 
  • Total Time Duration: 1 hour 
  • Negative Marking: There will be one negative mark for every wrong answer

Stage 2: Computer Typing Speed Test (Qualifying in Nature) 

The Computer Typing Speed Test is mandatory but qualifying in nature. Candidates must pass this stage to be consider for final merit list. 

Typing Speed Requirement: 

  • English: Minimum 35 words per minute
  • Hindi: Minimum 30 words per minute
